Video: the loveFOOD ultimate British pork pie
To celebrate both The British Pie Awards 2013 and St George's Day, we asked pie queen Sarah Pettegree to help us make a very special pork pie.
It’s The British Pie Awards 2013 this week, and once again I’m helping judge entries from all over Britain. So I thought I’d mark the occasion by making a very special Britain-shaped pork pie.
To help me, I roped in expert pie maker Sarah Pettegree from Bray’s Cottage pork pies. We’ve long been fans of Sarah's tasty pies, and have visited her bakery in north Norfolk. Interestingly she bakes them without jelly; just free-range pork, smoked bacon, pastry, seasoning, and her secret blend of herbs and spices. They’re very, very tasty.
The Brit Bowl
The Britain-shaped bowl that we used to make our Brit pie is by Swedish design company Sagaform. I got mine last year at the Adnams Kitchen shop in Southwold. Hirst and Hirst stocks them too and does mail order if you want to get one. They’re great fun, and a fab way of teaching British geography. I’ve made cottage pie in mine before, but never a full all-pastry pie... until now. Have a watch of the video to see how things turned out (not quite to plan), and if you want Sarah’s normal-sized pork pie recipe it’s here. Happy pork pie baking.
