Melton Mowbray-style pork pie
We’re cheating a bit with this one (pictured above). It's actually from The Great British Book of Baking, a collection of recipes by all sorts of chefs. Classic ingredients include unsmoked back bacon, boned shoulder of pork, fresh sage, anchovy essence and jellied stock.

Fruity lamb pie
TV chef Lotte Duncan unusually combines lamb with orange, cranberries, honey and mint. Lotte says: “The idea of fruit and meat is very English, very old and very delicious." The proof is in the eating.

To make this hearty pie from award-winning chef Simon Goodman, all you'll need is pigeon breast, wild mushrooms, a few veg and a splosh of red wine. Plus it's ready and on the table in under an hour.

Shepherd's pie
An extremely comforting dish which is welcomed throughout the year. Minced lamb with mushrooms form the backbone of the filling, which is flavoured with garlic, onions and beef stock.
Steak and ale pie
Beef and beer. What more could one hope for from a pie? The Hairy Bikers always use steak that's well marbled with fat for a fuller flavour. If you're not a fan of puff pastry, just use shortcrust instead.

Beef and Guinness pie
Alternatively, you can use Guinness for a really full-flavoured pie, which is slow-cooked with prunes and dark muscovado sugar to really bring out the flavour of the succulent beef.
Chunky steak and mushroom pie
Oozing with a rich shallot gravy and chock-a-block with hunks of meat, this is as manly as a pie gets. A bit of bacon and a glass of red wine adds even more flavour to John Webber's dish.

Mushroom pie
If you're a veggie, a take on mushroom pie without meat will probably appeal to you. So here it is! Great served with onion gravy, this pie packs in both porcini and chestnut mushrooms as well as cashew nuts and ground almonds.
