Top 10 street party food recipes

The Queen has been on the throne for 60 years, and what better way to celebrate that than with an enormous amount of food? Check out our top 10 street party recipes.

Toad in the hole… but mini! And we Brits do love our mini foods. Each little Yorkshire pud has one-and-a-half sausages in, and is flavoured with mustard, sage, and cider. Make as much as you physically can – they’ll be gone in seconds. (Pictured above)

rollOn to our second sausage recommendation… the good ol’ sausage roll. Except we’ve jazzed it up a bit by inviting an Aussie chef, Bill Granger, to write the recipe. Make those sausages really thick and sprinkle the pastry with sesame seeds for optimum results.

potPotato salad is as essential to street parties as bunting and plastic cups. Jazz yours up with a little salsa verde, made from fresh parsley and thyme, capers, garlic, anchovies, and plenty of olive oil. Best lay out the salad cream, too.

bitesSomething a bit different for the veggie guests. Spicy paneer and spinach bites are packed full of flavour – expect ginger, coriander and korma undertones – and are made for dipping. Try mint yoghurt or mango chutney.

Salmon tartWhat a pretty tart! Take a pastry masterclass from James Martin, whose salmon tart is not only bursting with protein and omega 3, but also colour and textures. You’ll need short crust pastry (shop stuff is fine), leeks, double cream, cheddar cheese and fresh thyme.

Tomato tart with goat's cheeseAnother tarty option, this time for veggies – a tomato tart with goat’s cheese. Super colourful, it’s ideal for al fresco eating and the quality of the goat’s cheese is essential to this recipe. Chef Daniel Galmiche favours Sainte-Maure de Touraine for its nutty aroma.

Salmon croquettesHere's one more corker from James Martin. Salmon croquettes are terribly easy to pick up and pass around, and this recipe will take you only 30 minutes. It’s cheap, too, due to the tinned salmon, and is best dipped in sweet chilli jam.

cakeQueen of baking Rachel Allen smashes her chocolate marshmallow biscuit cake into hearty chunks, making it perfect for party food. They’re chok-a-block with mini marshmallows, ginger nut pieces, honeycomb and chocolate. And apparently Her Majesty is a fan of choccie biscuit cake….

squareRachel Allen again, with her apple and raisin honey squares. Again, they’re super easy to make (set aside 25 minutes) and are gorgeously gooey inside. They’re best eaten with a cuppa, so if you’ve got a massive tea urn out on the street than these are a must!

cakeA Jubilee party would not be a Jubilee party without a Victoria sponge cake as the centrepiece. Edd Kimber, of Great British Bake Off fame, has mastered the recipe for a perfect, airy, golden sponge. Follow his instructions to a tee, and you’ll be laughing.
