The best clothes to wear for foodies
From bacon scarves to a popcorn dress and fruity shorts, check out our top 10 favourite foodie fashions.
The hamburger dress
What better way to proclaim your carnivorous preferences than to wear a burger dress? Complete with bun seeds, curly lettuce, and a slice of cheese, this must-have knit-wear has been crocheted to create a burger-like texture and was designed in 2005 by American artist Joy Kampia O’Shell (she does a doughnut necklace, too).
Scratch ‘n Sniff
Who remembers these? When I was a whippersnapper, I had a strawberry milkshake scratch ‘n sniff tee, and my brother had chocolate milkshake. We were the coolest kids in school, and 15-odd years later I still haven’t got so much pleasure from clothes. Smellies T Shirts sell them in cherry, banana, grape, apple, and strawberry flavours… scratch the print to release the fruity aroma!
Pizza on a shirt
Love pizza? Wear pizza! Be the loudest in the room with pizzashirt.net, a t-shirt so unashamedly bold that wearing it in public would pose a safety hazard for passing traffic. At first I thought it looked like a horrible injury, but I’m warming to the pepperoni splodges now. There’s a veggie option available too, complete with what looks like mushrooms and red onion.
Full English jumper
Ahhhh, a smiley face made from two fried eggs, a grilled tomato, and a bendy sausage. It’s like those special birthday breakfasts you get sometimes (add two fried mushrooms for ears), and therefore makes me feel very happy indeed. The smiley jumper comes from the Ashish collection for Topshop (one of Rihanna’s favourite labels) and will cost you £40-60… think how many fry-ups you could get for that!
The bacon wrap
Sticking to the fry-up theme, how about wearing a rasher of bacon around your neck? The Royal Bacon Society gives us four options, from the “unsettlingly real-looking” felt scarf worth $120 made by Chrischunski’s Etsy shop (left), to a make-your-own option from monstercrochet.com, which provides a bacon scarf pattern for just $5. They also do a ‘chicken beanie hat’, and a ‘turkeyzilla tote bag’, so you could in theory make your whole outfit out of meat, Lady Gaga style…
Gaga style
…and talking of Lady G herself, how could we forget her marvellous meat dress? Made from raw beef (Los Angeles sourced) and designed by Franc Fernandez, the American pop singer wore it to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards and later took it off for post-party nibbles (at least, we like to think so). It was condemned by animal rights groups, but heralded by Time magazine as the top fashion statement of 2010. Personally, we prefer our dresses vegetarian.
The popcorn dress
Another celeb-led fashion statement, this time by singer and dresser extraordinaire Nicki Minaj. Whilst promoting her album in Tokyo, she wore a popcorn outfit comprised of a striped pastel-coloured corset bodice; red and white stripy skirt (mimicking the box); and popcorn kernels erupting from her, ahem, breast region. She posted a picture of her cinema snack-self onto Twitter, and the world went mad for it. You can see more Nicki Minaj red carpet moments here.
Fruit shorts
Time for something a little more mainstream, designed for us plebs. As part of their 2012 springtime Versace collection, H&M launched a pair of pretty blue denim shorts, decorated with an abundance of raspberries, blackberries, peaches and strawberries. They also do the same print in a flowing summer dress too, which also includes blueberries and butterflies.
Cream puff wedding dress
Picture a world where you can eat your own wedding dress... hang on; it does exist! Hop over to Ukraine, and you’ll find baker Valentyn Shtefano, who in 2006 made his finacée’s wedding dress out of flour, eggs, sugar, and caramel. It took 1,500 cream puffs and two months to make – now that’s what I call love.
Peas on earth
You can’t get much more fashionable than a David & Goliath t-shirt, especially when it’s as witty as this one. We all want ‘peas on earth’, and the quickest way to get it is to wear it. Bright yellow with four little green peas standing on top of the world, you can buy this t-shirt for men, women and toddlers alike. Peas can we have one, David & Goliath?
