The Great British Bake Off: who will win?

We’re now more than halfway through Bake Off 2014. We look at who’s left and who might be eliminated next.

Warning: this article contains spoilers. Don’t read it if you’re not up to date!

We're now more than halfway through the fifth season of The Great British Bake Off. Five bakers from the initial line-up have been eliminated by Paul Hollywood and Marry Berry, and one has left through illness, leaving six bakers left to compete.

Who is on the path to the baking glory? And who will be next to leave?

The remaining contestants

With Claire, Enwezor, Jordan, Iain (controversially), Diana (through illness) and Norman gone, this week the judges decided not to send anyone home, which evens out the numbers for the three-person final.

The one remaining contestant who still hasn't received the Star Baker award is Martha. She didn’t do so well with her pastry creations in week five, but has generally been a strong contender without edging into the top spot.

Meanwhile, Luis, Kate, Nancy and Chetna have each been named Star Baker once.

My predictions

From the series so far, I think that Kate, Nancy and Richard are the ones who have shown the most promise, and I can see those three making it through to the final.

Richard Bake OffI’m backing Richard to win. Things have gone pear-shaped in the last two weeks, but he’s been the Star Baker twice and is the only contestant to have achieved that accolade in this series so far. And his ‘pirates’ scene for the Showstopper Challenge during biscuit week was pretty mind-blowing. I think he'll recuperate and be spurred by the judge's comments to lead the pack once more.

His bakes look great, are created with expert precision, and the judges seem to have enjoyed pretty much everything he’s made.
What a shame we can’t have a taste too…

Previous winners

All four winners of previous Bake Offs (and some of the runners up) are now busy baking, blogging and writing books for a living.

It seems likely that the winner of this year’s competition will also become a well-known face around the country. It won't be long until we know who that person is.

Disagree with my prediction? Who do you think deserves to win the competition? And who will be eliminated next? Share your thoughts in the Comments below.
