Taste test: unusual Easter eggs for 2015

Updated on 31 March 2015 | 0 Comments

We rank some of the more adventurous, more expensive and just downright strange Easter eggs of 2015.

Having recently blind taste tested a dozen milk chocolate Easter eggs from various big name brands, we thought we should also check out some of the more interesting and unusual Easter eggs on sale this year.

From white chocolate to an egg with edible gold, and even one with a dose of Marmite – which more exotic eggs are the best of 2015?

15: Marmite Egg

Marmite eggYou might have guessed that this would be a hugely divisive egg (“you either love it or hate it” is not just a marketing message). It was given scores between zero and nine out of 10 by our tasters. Some said it tasted “like dirt”, while others said they liked the “meaty aftertaste”. A very strange one, but it had its admirers.

14: Matchmakers Zingy Orange

matchmakers eggThis one made itself popular with some who loved the orange zing and crispy texture – but it was also heavily criticised for an artificial flavour, which was described by one taste tester as “medicinal”. Other people were simply dismissive of orange chocolate in general, but this did get a very high score from a couple of tasters.

5.4/10
£2.00 | 162g

13: Heston Golden Egg

Heston eggSurprisingly, while Heston’s Golden Egg drew a fair amount of praise, many simply didn’t go wild for it, despite its “subtle” bitter flavours and stunning appearance, shimmering with edible gold dust.

It's “not too bitter, but nothing special” said one person.

£20.00 | 270g

=10: Milkybar Egg

Milkybar eggThe only white chocolate contender among the pack – “not real chocolate” as one person immediately pointed out – the Milkybar egg probably has a fair few fond childhood memories attached to it.

Yet it only received a fairly average score from our tasters, who said it wasn't too sweet, but doesn't really stand out.

6.2/10
£1.00 | 65g

=10: Hotel Chocolat ‘The Milk Egglet’

Hotel Chocolat Milk Egglet“Really thick and creamy” milk chocolate makes this one a little different from many others out there this year, but despite many people liking the thick shell, it let itself down flavour-wise, with some saying it tasted “cheap”. Which isn’t what you want to hear when you look at the price tag.

6.2/10

£27.00 | 390g

=10: Sainsbury’s Egg with Chocolate Pearls

Sainsbury's eggThis one may have “nice and smooth” chocolate, but it’s “boring”. The chocolate pearls are clustered around one section of the egg, so the rest is just a plain egg, which might explain some of the lack of excitement expressed. “Tastes like cooking chocolate” read one particularly scathing remark.

6.2/10
£8 | 450g

9: M&S Single Origin Cocoa Pod 69% Dark

Cocoa podThis should be singled out purely for its design – instead of an egg, M&S have gone with a cocoa pod, which looks very attractive. With rather a bitter taste, it got a mixed reaction, as some people preferred the milk chocolate eggs. Not a bad score overall though, and if you’re a fan of dark chocolate you’ll probably really appreciate it.

6.3/10
£12 | 210g

=7: Green & Black's Organic 70% Dark

Green and Blacks 70% EggAnother egg for the dark chocolate lovers, this did slightly better than M&S’s pod. Some commented on an “interesting, slightly fruity taste”, indicating a complexity of flavours. It also won some converts from the milk choc camp, who said it was bitter but better balanced than the pod – despite having ever so slightly more cocoa content.

6.4/10
£6.59 | 165g

=7: Moser Roth Chocolate Delight (Aldi)

Moser RothNo one really had too much to say about this egg, good or bad, and it did OK scorewise.

The frontispiece isn't really that tasty apparently, but the rest of the egg got a wavering thumbs up in general. A little dull, and “looks better than it tastes” apparently, but a decent cheap(er) contender.

6.4/10
£2.99 | 250g

=5: Tesco finest Hand Decorated Egg

Tesco eggThis egg is absolutely huge, made out of a whole kilogram of chocolate. It looks pretty good too, although the decoration doesn’t add anything in the way of flavour. The chocolate is thick, and though a couple of people called it out for being “boring”, due to the lack of additional ingredients, it’s “creamy” and “great quality”. It’s also just 83p per 100g, which is fairly good value too.

6.5/10
£12 | 1kg

=5: Co-op Popping Candy Egg

Popping candy Co-opThe popping candy “brings out my inner child” commented one taster, which a lot of people agreed with.

A ‘fun’ egg, although one person said it was “adventurous, but doesn’t taste great”. And although the chocolate might not be amazing, the special ingredient was very popular.

6.5/10
£5 | 160g

4: Asda Hot Cross Tower of Eggs

Asda hot cross eggsThese have a tiny amount of Belgian white chocolate to mark the ‘crosses’ on each egg (which aren’t actually hot), but you really can’t taste it. That’s a shame, but despite tasting fairly plain, Asda’s small eggs did far better than its Colour Splash Egg which got a measly 4.2/10.

6.7/10
£10 | 450g

3: M&S Feuilletine Egg

M&S FeuilletineMuch more like it. The crispy, crunchy covering of this egg combines with the creamy chocolate to create a mouthfeel of contrasting textures and delicious flavours.

“Great chocolate – love the crispy crunch” gushed one tester, while the thickness of the egg also got the thumbs up from others.

7.0/10
£15 | 345g

2: Co-op Popcorn Egg

Popcorn egg Co-opCo-op’s other egg in this test did really well, considering it’s a fairly cheap proposition. The 'splat' on the front looks a little messy but once you get past that, it's a proper treat.

On the whole, people liked the popcorn flavour and the crunch, and although a couple of people said it tasted a “little cheap” it took second place so it can’t be that bad! Only one person really didn't like it, saying that it had a “nasty aftertaste.”

7.1/10
£5 | 160g

1: Lindt Master Chocolatier Heavenly Hazelnut

Lindt Hazelnut eggThe clear winner, Lindt’s Heavenly Hazelnut egg was immediately loved by almost everyone, barring one person who gave it a zero but whose opinion was overshadowed by the vast majority giving almost full marks. “Love the texture”, “amazing”, “love the nuts, the chocolate tastes so smooth and lovely too” were just a few of the almost universally positive comments.

8.1/10
£19.99 | 350g

Some are a bit eggspensive

As you might have noticed, you're going to have shell out a fair bit for some of these eggs.

If you’re not bothered about having your eggs by Easter Sunday, you can always look out for the clearance sales from Easter Monday onwards, where you’ll likely be able to pick up many of these at a fraction of the price.
