If you're craving a slice of something comforting, here are some recipes that should satisfy every taste.

It seems Austerity Britain is sending us firmly in the direction of comfort food. BBC Good Food says that cake has now overtaken chicken as the most searched-for food term on its website.

The proliferation of baking shows on the telly, including the BBC, can’t have hurt either. Presenter Lorraine Pascale has also penned the best-selling book Baking Made Easy.

So if you’re after a bit of comfort cake, here are our top five recipes for every taste:
