What's the best way to make a bacon sandwich?

A new survey claims it has found the formula for the ultimate bacon butty. Do you agree?

What’s the perfect way to make a bacon sandwich? Research for Direct Line polled 1,003 adults and found that the favourite approach was smoked back bacon and brown sauce on untoasted white bread.

A divide was apparent between west and east regions, with westerners opting for brown sauce, while more people in the east of the UK preferred ketchup. While smoked bacon beat unsmoked overall, unsmoked wasn’t without its fans.

I’m honestly a little surprised at the North East result – in the land of glorious stottie cake, the winner was white sliced bread. White baps were most popular in Yorkshire and the Humber, the East Midlands and Wales, while white sliced bread dominated every other region.

Matt’s perfect sandwich

Snip open a pack of bacon and a multitude of decisions need to be made.

Alright, I’m being overly dramatic, but there are important questions to answer such as: white or brown bread? Ketchup or brown sauce? Butter or no butter?

For me, there really is only one way to eat a bacon sandwich, and that’s with peanut butter. When I introduce this idea to people who are unfamiliar with it they mostly react with disgust. But when I convince them to take a bite, they’re converted.

I’m not the only one preaching the good word on behalf of this sandwich, and it’s becoming increasingly popular. The combination was first made (in)famous by Elvis Presley, who used to enjoy his with the addition of sliced banana and grape jam.

Not wanting to go out the way he did, I stick to the (comparatively) low calorie two-filling sarnie, and eat these very rarely! On a special occasion, I’ll sneak an egg in there too. I prefer eating this on wholemeal bread, so at least there’s a token attempt at healthier eating in there.

Or maybe the best way would be with Stilton and chocolate...
