According to a McDonald's staff member writing on Quora in 2017, there's an option to press an 'Uplift Hash Brown' button on the till – thereby charging customers less to add a hash brown to their order when they’ve bought a meal. If you add a hash brown any other way, you'll reportedly be charged full price.
