24 secret menu items from your favorite fast food chains
Fast food's best-kept secrets
Ever wanted an an extra three beef patties in your burger or some onion rings thrown in with your fries? Well now you can. We round up some of the most creative secret menu items you can actually order.
In-N-Out: Animal Style burger and fries
‘Animal Style’ is probably the worst kept secret in the fast food industry, but also one of the most loved. People will stand in line for hours just to get their hands on some of that saucey goodness. But for those who don’t know what ‘Animal-Style’ actually is, it’s basically melted cheese topped with a special, magical sauce and a pile of grilled onions. You can add this to your fries or your burger. And trust me, people go nuts for it.
In-N-Out: 3x3/4x4 burger
People also go nuts for extra patties. Why settle for one when you can have two, three, or even four? Also hidden on the secret menu at In-N-Out are the 3x3 and 4x4 burger options, which are exactly what they suggest: three or four beef patties sandwiched between lettuce, tomato, three slices of American cheese and a baked bun.
In-N-Out: The Flying Dutchman
If you aren’t into carbs, the Flying Dutchman might be more up your street. It is essentially just two beef patties sandwiched around two slices of cheese. There’s no lettuce, no wrapper and no bun. But you can ask for extra toppings, or even make it Animal Style.
Nando's: BBQ sauce on your chicken
If you love Nando's but aren’t a fan of the spice, there’s another flavor option that isn’t on the menu: BBQ. Don't ask for BBQ though, because it’s actually called ‘Peri-Tamer’ and is a sweet, sticky, BBQ-flavored sauce Nando's use to put on chicken for kids. It’s not advertised, but it is extremely popular among those who know about it, so don’t be afraid to ask for it.
Nando's: Crispy chicken wings
The best thing about chicken wings is the crispy skin, so don't be afraid to tell your server and they'll keep them on the grill for longer.
Nando's: Hawaiian chicken chili melt
Regular Nando's-goers will be familiar with the phrase “would you like any cheese or pineapple with that?” and have probably felt a bit confused by it, but it's actually pretty genius. Adding cheese and pineapple to your burger tastes absolutely delicious. Ask for a dollop of chili jam on there too, and you’ve got yourself a Hawaiian chicken chili melt. Yum.
Burger King: Quad Stacker
Burger King’s signature secret menu item is this monster loaded with four patties, four slices of cheese, bacon and wrapped in a hearty bun. Most Burger King locations will sell a 'Triple Stacker', but some will know of the ‘Quad Stacker’ too, which is where it's really at. It'll cost you $3.99 (£3.20) in the US to be precise.
Burger King: Veggie Whopper
Everyone loves a Whopper, apart from vegetarians. But don’t fear, veggies, you can enjoy the same Whopper experience with a veggie patty, all you need to do is ask.
Burger King: Frings
Yes, it is totally possible to order yourself a combination of fries and onion rings together. The dream team, also known as Frings, should be available in any branch, providing they have onion rings on the menu.
Five Guys: Double grilled-cheese burger
What isn’t there to like about this? Grilled cheese and two burger patties? Yes please. All you need to do is ask for two grilled cheese sandwiches and ask for them to put however many other hamburger patties you want inside, along with your chosen toppings. It will come with a price though, as you’ll have to pay for the two grilled cheese sandwiches and pay a further $1.80 (£1.44) for each additional patty.
Five Guys: Patty melt
Another delight for cheese lovers is this patty melt, which consists of warm cheese, grilled onions and a burger, all sandwiched between a bun that is grilled on a frying pan or griddle. Just ask for a grilled cheese sandwich and then ask them to add hamburger patties inside (along with your favorite toppings of course).
KFC: Build-your-own-bowl
Not really feeling any of the bowl options on the menu? No worries, you can just build your own. KFC will allow you to pretty much add anything from the menu to a bowl, such as fries, gravy and cheese, or mashed potatoes and more chicken. Get creative!
KFC: Poutine
Talking of gravy and cheese, KFC does also serve its very own poutine, but not everywhere. The Canadian dish is popular in Canada (believe it or not), but isn’t often served elsewhere. This doesn't mean you can't ask for it though. In case you’re wondering what poutine actually is, it’s a plate of fries with fresh, hot cheese curds on top and smothered in gravy. Sold?
Wendy’s: The Barnyard
True to its name, the Barnyard is a sandwich that combines a pile of meats from across the farm between Wendy’s buns. Ask for this and, providing employees know what it is, you should get a burger that consists of bacon, beef, spicy chicken fillet, ham and cheese. Don’t expect this to come cheap though.
Wendy’s: The Grand Slam
In a more simplified version of the Barnyard, this giant combines four beef patties into one tall burger, much like In-N-Out’s 4x4 and Burger King’s Quad Stacker.
Chipotle: Burritodilla
Meet the Burritodilla – a not-so-secret menu item, which basically combines a burrito and a quesadilla into one crunchy and gooey delight. To order one of these, you just need to ask for a quesadilla with the ingredients of a burrito (and lots and lots of cheese).
Chipotle: Quesarito
Much like the Burritodilla, the Quesarito combines both a burrito and a quesadilla, but this time by wrapping a regular burrito in a cheesy quesadilla shell. You just need to ask for a regular quesadilla – which the server will make by sandwiching cheese in between two tortillas and toasting it – to replace the regular tortilla used to make a burrito. But beware that, due to its popularity, you’ll now be charged an extra $3.50 (£2.81) for this delicious secret.
Subway: Old cut
For some reason, many people are really into the way Subway used to serve their subs. Traditionally, the sub was cut horizontally and bread was dug out of the center to make way for the fillings, before the lid was popped back on. If you’re lucky enough, you can ask to have your sub this way too but you might need to explain how it’s done.
Subway: Pizza Sub
All hail the Subway Pizza Sub. You’ll find these in some Subways around the world, but it isn’t officially included on the menu anymore, so you’ll just need to ask for a sub with pepperoni, tomato sauce and cheese. All toasted of course.
McDonalds: Big McChicken
If you’re all about the chicken, indulge in this. McDonald’s Big McChicken, as the name suggests, is a cross between the Big Mac and a McChicken sandwich. To get this you’ll need to order a Big Mac and three McChicken sandwiches and just replace the beef patties with the chicken fillets. Expect to fork out around $6.99 (£5.60) for this feast though.
McDonald’s: Big Mac sauce as a side with fries
Some restaurants will try to charge you for a side of the tasty and tangy Big Mac sauce, but it's got to be worth it.
McDonald's: The McKinley Mac
Think Big Mac, but bigger and better. While the typical Big Mac consists of two 1.6oz beef patties, the McKinley Mac has two quarter pound patties. Just ask for a Big Mac with two quarter-pound patties, or if you know the location makes McKinley's regularly, just ask for it by name. This definitely isn't for anyone with a small appetite.
McDonald's: Chicken McGriddle
The Chicken McGriddle is probably one of McD's most famous 'secret' menu items in the US. It is even served on the menu in some southeastern US branches. For those who aren't familiar with the McGriddle, it's basically a breakfast sandwich consisting of fried bacon, American cheese and egg. But if you fancy adding some chicken, simply ask for the Chicken McGriddle and most staff will probably know what you're talking about.
McDonald's: Half price Big Mac
Finally, if you really love the sound of all of these meaty feasts, but don't want to splash so much cash, you could opt for the 'poor man's Big Mac'. Essentially, it's a build-your-own Big Mac. Just ask for a McDouble/Double Cheeseburger, with lettuce and Big Mac sauce instead of ketchup and mustard. You'll love it.
