Tried & tested: 2018's best high street Christmas sandwiches
Best festive bites
Nothing kicks off the festive season like a good Christmas sandwich. From Pret to Boots, we've taste tested this year's high street offerings to pick out the crackers.
Tesco Finest Salmon Duo Bagel, £3.50
Although the bagel is quite thick and dense, the filling makes up for it. The combination of the hot and cold smoked salmon is a revelation and the candy-striped beetroot adds a pleasant crunch. However, there could be a touch more horseradish crème fraîche dressing.
Vegetarian: Tesco Vegetable Christmas Dinner Wrap, £2.50
We love the look of this wrap – the pumpkin-flavour tortilla both tastes delicious and looks great. The filling is satisfying, with a mix of maple-roasted vegetables and a traditional vegetarian stuffing.
M&S Three Bird Roast, £3.80
Christmas just got bigger and better – this 3-in-1 sandwich from M&S is a real festive celebration. The Three Bird Roast contains three sandwiches: roast turkey and stuffing; roast chicken dinner; and duck and plum chutney sandwiches. The flavours are nice – we particularly loved the stuffing, the crunchy shredded roast veg and the duck meat. However, all three sandwiches have a bit too much mayo.
Vegan: Pret Very Merry Christmas Lunch, £3.50
An excellent vegan sandwich, everyone couldn't wait to go back for more. The grilled carrot slices running through the sandwich offer a welcome bite and a different texture to the excellently spiced vegan stuffing. We especially loved the nuttiness of it and the crispy onions. If there was just a little more port and orange cranberry sauce, it would be been perfect.
Vegetarian: Waitrose & Partners Brie, Grape & Plum Chutney, £2.95
Everyone agreed this was a very well-balanced sandwich. Nutty brie is paired with thinly-sliced grapes and warmly-spiced, slightly tangy plum chutney – a winning combination. It's an excellent veggie sarnie reminiscent of a Christmas cheeseboard.
Co-op Turkey & Trimmings, £3.15 (gluten-free)
An excellent option for coeliacs, this is a classic turkey and trimmings sandwich on gluten-free bread. Although the bread is a bit on the dry side, it's one of the better gluten-free ones we've tested. The smoky bacon flavour comes through really well. With a touch more cranberry sauce it would've been perfect.
Pret Christmas Lunch Sandwich, £3.75
A firm favourite for many years, the Pret Christmas sandwich is a classic. Thick slices of turkey are layered with port and orange sauce and herby pork stuffing. Please, just give us a bit more sauce...
Vegan: Sainsbury's Festive Falafel & Houmous Wrap, £2.30
A good vegan option, the falafel is soft and warmly-spiced. Our favourite bit of the wrap is the pickled red cabbage. It's crunchy and adds a welcome juiciness – we just wish there was a bit more houmous.
Waitrose & Partners Pigs Under Blankets, £2.95
Meaty and indulgent, it's the perfect sandwich for meat-lovers. There's plenty of tangy chutney that cuts though the rich, heavy flavours and adds much welcome moisture to the sandwich. We particularly loved how well the peppery sausage flavour comes through.
Vegetarian: EAT Brie, Cranberry & Stuffing on Onion Seed, from £3.99
The filling in this sandwich, combining brie, cranberry sauce and a crunchy nut stuffing, was a firm favourite. Our testers especially loved the soft onion bloomer with nigella seeds that contributed to a savoury, inviting aroma.
Tesco Finest Festive Feast Trio, £3.50
A great choice if you can't settle on one sandwich, this festive trio has a bit of everything. To start, tuck into a prawn cocktail with a boozy bloody mary sauce, followed by a traditional turkey and stuffing roll – this is one of our favourite fillings from all the sandwiches we've tried. End your festive lunch with a chocolate roll filled with smooth cream cheese and finished with a drizzle of port and cherry sauce.
Vegetarian: Boots Parsnip Fritter & Butternut Squash, £2.75
The nutty flavour of the filling is especially festive and, unlike may other Christmas sandwiches, the bread on this sarnie was soft without being soggy. It could've done with a touch more sauce, however, the roasted veg flavours came through really well.
Sainsbury's The Big Beef, £3
Hats off to Sainsbury's for creativity – this stacked sandwich has a gravy-soaked Yorkshire pudding in the middle with delicious, salty beef around it. Overall, the flavours are nice but we really want a bit more sauce in it. We'd recommend smothering some mustard or horseradish sauce on the bun.
Vegan: M&S No Turkey Feast, £3.30
An excellent alternative for vegans, this sandwich swaps turkey for soya protein and pairs it with tangy cranberry chutney. Overall, it's a pretty good sandwich and our testers particularly loved that it wasn't dry. M&S also support the charity Shelter, donating 5% of each sale from the Food on The Move festive collection.
Co-op Coronation Turkey Brioche Roll, £3.25
Although this won't be everyone's cup of tea, those who like a coronation chicken sandwich will love this coronation turkey. The brioche roll complements the nicely-spiced filling. The box is especially cute, however we felt there was just a tad too much bread.
Vegan: Asda Festive Bubble and Squeak, £2.50
One of the cheapest vegan sandwich options on the market, this festive sarnie from Asda combines delicious sage and onion bread with a winter vegetable fritter, Christmas-spiced braised cabbage and Christmas chutney. It reminded our tasters of falafel and overall received good feedback. A word of caution though: both the sage flavour and aroma come through quite strongly, so if you're not a fan this isn't for you.
Tesco Turkey & Trimmings, £3.00 (gluten-free)
The best gluten-free sandwich we've tried, this classic Christmas sarnie features great-tasting bread that's not too dry and resembles regular malt bread. The filling is delicious as well – there are turkey breast slices layered with sausages, bacon, and sage and onion stuffing. There's also a generous helping of sweet cranberry sauce that helps cut through the meatiness.
EAT Festive Full Works Bloomer, from £3.99
We loved the pure indulgence of this sandwich – the butter-basted turkey is full of flavour, the sage and onion stuffing nice and peppery, the ham adds a savoury smokiness and it all comes together sandwiched between cranberry sauce and mayo.
Vegetarian: Pret Veggie Christmas Lunch, £3.50
Although, we wouldn't say this sandwich is particularly festive, not everyone wants a Christmas dinner in a sarnie and this veggie option offers a great meat-free alternative. Notes of sweet roasted butternut squash complement a festive pesto, made with pine nuts, chestnuts, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. Pret also donates 50p from every festive sandwich and baguette they sell to the Pret Foundation Trust, helping to break the cycle of homelessness.
Waitrose & Partners Ham Hock & Chilli-Lilli, £2.30
A surprising combination of flavours, this festive sarnie was a big hit among our tasters thanks to its excellent bread-to-filling ratio and came in as a close second. The ham hock has a rich, meaty flavour and is not too salty. The pickled flavours of the 'chilli-lilli' offer a really nice balance. We only marked it down for not delivering more of a chilli kick to the piccalilli.
Winner: Asda Turkey & Trimmings, £2.50
A definite Christmas classic, this turkey and trimmings sandwich with pigs under blankets, stuffing and a cranberry and port sauce is a festive feast. There's a lovely peppery flavour coming through from the Cumberland sausage and the turkey has a lovely roast flavour but we just wish there was more sauce.
