Nothing screams nostalgia more to a Brit than a slice of Battenberg cake. Reportedly named because it was first made to celebrate the 1884 marriage of Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria, the Battenberg cake is a simple sponge cake with multicoloured sections surrounded by marzipan. It makes a perfect accompaniment to a cup of tea and looks even better as part of a traditional afternoon tea.
