A step-by-step guide

Whatever type of board you want to create, there are certain steps that will make assembling your board easier. We spoke to Claire Gillies, founder of meal-planning resource Delicious and Real, for her recommendations.
Start with the basics
![](https://loveincorporated.blob.core.windows.net/contentimages/gallery/c43b850e-25ba-40d9-8cb1-6f61f6485c2b-3.jpg)
Firstly, choose your board and a small selection of bowls or jars for dips, sauces and chutneys. At this stage, think about the kind of look you're going for. For example, Claire's preference is a wooden board with blue-and-white, vintage-style china bowls. The board size will determine how much you're able to add to your board, so choose carefully.
Arrange your bowls
![](https://loveincorporated.blob.core.windows.net/contentimages/gallery/47771aa4-c4c6-4ef1-9d0b-4003d07b38fe-4.jpg)
Fill your bowls with sauces and small items that would otherwise scatter (think olives, hummus, nuts, honey and pickles), and arrange them as anchor points on the board. “You want to leave spaces around them, which you can fill in with your other ingredients,” Claire says.
Mind the gaps
![](https://loveincorporated.blob.core.windows.net/contentimages/gallery/4c9976de-85a9-42e2-9d8c-9cd116c8fdaf-5.jpg)
When laying out your ingredients, aim to fill in all the gaps. Claire recommends standing back after each section is done and looking at the board as a whole – it will make it easier to determine where to place the next items. To achieve an aesthetically pleasing board, you want to avoid leaving any blank spaces.
Keep ingredients looking fresh
![](https://loveincorporated.blob.core.windows.net/contentimages/gallery/9e086c5a-26fa-44b6-a1ed-6563d0296c66-6.jpg)
Using fruits and vegetables in your spread? Claire says: “Opt for vibrant varieties that won’t discolour when chopped. Pineapple, melon, strawberries, carrots and peppers all work well.” If you're keen to include fruits and veggies that may turn brown after a while, like apples or avocados, there are a couple of hacks to keep them looking fresher for longer. Add a squeeze of lemon juice to keep avocado at its best, or quickly soak your fruit in honey-infused water (stir honey through boiling water, then allow to cool).
The more, the merrier

For plenty of wow factor, it's important to fill your board with a variety of flavours, colours, shapes and textures. If you're creating a cheeseboard, choose cheeses that look, feel and taste significantly different. Slices of sharp Cheddar are really eye-catching when fanned; pair them with chunks of Parmesan for a crumbly mouthfeel, and a sweet and creamy Stilton to balance it all out.
Deli delights

For charcuterie boards, you can use pre-packaged meats – or, even better, head to your local deli. When it comes to arranging your cured meats, you can stack, fan or even roll them up. However you choose to present your charcuterie nibbles, make sure you serve them at room temperature for optimum flavour.
A flowery flourish

One of the best things about grazing boards is that you can get creative with the way you present your ingredients. Take these charcuterie roses, for example. To make them, all you need is a small glass, like an espresso glass. Start by placing slices along the rim of the glass so that half of the round folds down in, and half out. Overlap the rounds around the flute, and layer them until you can no longer see the inside of the glass. Flip the glass over and release your rose by twisting the glass back and forth gently.
Cut it out

To make a cute and creative board, take a cue from Japanese bento boxes, which often use cookie cutters to create sweetly shaped fruits, biscuits, bread and more. Using cookie cutters to shape your grazing board ingredients not only looks great, but it will also make it easier to keep your board to a certain theme.

Create your board by combining flatbreads, falafel, tabbouleh salad, hummus, baba ghanoush, olive tapenade and more. The possibilities are endless, and you can easily make your board vegetarian or vegan.

For a sophisticated salmon sharing board, whip high-quality cream cheese with your favourite herbs (such as dill, tarragon or rosemary) and a little honey, then use it to cover your board. Top the cheese with cured salmon, slices of red onion, some olives and a generous crack of fresh black pepper, and serve with brown bread or toasted bagels.

Sometimes, only fried food will do! Cover your board with baking paper and go crazy with the snacks: chips, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, boneless wings, halloumi fries and anything else you fancy. You can even use an air fryer to make it easier. Serve the lot with some aioli or dipping sauce.

This classic board packed with dips and crudités makes a refreshing dinner party starter. Pair your selection with tangy and creamy dips, such as blue cheese dip, hummus or whipped feta.

Raclette board
![](https://loveincorporated.blob.core.windows.net/contentimages/gallery/8ae62321-3ebb-4aa2-ba6c-887d0ae6deba-raclette-board.jpg)
Gooey cheese on top of everything? Yes please! This board pairs raclette cheese with roasted potatoes, breadsticks, cherry tomatoes, crackers and chutney. If you have a raclette grill, use it to melt your cheese before placing it on a heat-resistant board. If you don't have one, use a cast-iron pan to melt the cheese in the oven, then pour it over your arranged toppings.
All-potato board
![](https://loveincorporated.blob.core.windows.net/contentimages/gallery/bf5edafd-9a74-4b14-a081-496b7e9974b7-29.jpg)
Who doesn’t love potatoes? There are so many potato snacks available these days, you can make a whole board full of them. Assemble a selection of tater tots, hash browns, croquettes, thick-cut chips, French fries, sweet potato wedges and more, then add your favourite dips. The result is beige but beautiful.
Sushi board
![](https://loveincorporated.blob.core.windows.net/contentimages/gallery/9c06b910-4d7a-450f-a415-7e228c3abd49-26.jpg)
Who could forget that iconic Sex and the City scene where Samantha tries to celebrate Valentine’s Day by covering herself with sushi? We think it would have been a more successful night if she'd placed it on a nice board and celebrated with her best friends instead. Gather your favourite sushi rolls, assemble them on a board, and toast your get-together with some Japanese-inspired drinks.
Breakfast board
![](https://loveincorporated.blob.core.windows.net/contentimages/gallery/43e2a989-681c-4aa6-b8e0-430170c1dd8a-18.jpg)
A hotel-worthy breakfast on a board! Simply arrange mini waffles or pancakes across your platter, then surround them with maple syrup, jams, chocolate sauce and freshly whipped cream. Next, add some pastries (mini croissants, pains au chocolat and Danish rolls are always a good idea), fresh fruit (such as strawberries, grapes, melon or pineapple chunks) and, if you like, some crispy rashers of bacon.
Jarcuterie
![](https://loveincorporated.blob.core.windows.net/contentimages/gallery/829ed273-8bf0-4b27-bd4b-15f412a4f4ca-jarcuterie.jpg)
Don't like the idea of everyone dipping (or worse, double-dipping) into the same food? Swap your sharing board for another foodie trend: jarcuterie. With individual servings presented in glasses or jars, every guest will get their own mini-selection of meats and toppings. Simply dust off your nicest tumblers, Kilner jars or chunky wine glasses, layer up your cheese, meats and antipasti, and serve.
Butter board

Jump on a recent grazing board trend with compound, of flavoured, butter. Beurre composé, as it's called in France, is a typical staple often found in French fine dining restaurants. To make it, whip softened butter with an ingredient or ingredients of your choice – whether it's classic (honey, herbs or garlic, for example) or offbeat (like bacon jam, crispy chicken skin or truffle) – and then spread it onto a board. Top with crunchy garnishes and a sprinkle of coarse salt, then serve with toasted bread or crackers.
Get on the butter candle trend
![](https://loveincorporated.blob.core.windows.net/contentimages/gallery/eac9ec28-4f58-430b-abb5-39d1d79691e7-grazing_buttercandle.jpg)
This ingenious creation takes bread and butter to delicious new heights. The butter candle is all over TikTok and makes a truly show-stopping centrepiece for celebrations and dinner parties. It basically involves shaping softened butter into a candle shape, adding a food-safe candle wick and placing it inside a hollowed-out loaf of bread. To serve you simply set it alight and mop up all that tasty melted butter with chunks of bread. There are plenty of guides to making the interactive dish, but we love this garlic butter version from Cabot Creamery.

If you've got a sweet tooth, try this grazing board take on an all-American campfire treat. To make it, arrange graham crackers, chocolate bars and biscuits around a selection of baked or torched marshmallows and pots of melted chocolate. To get the marshmallows nice and gooey, simply arrange them in a small cast-iron pan and place in a hot oven for a few minutes.

Create your own sundae board with this super easy trick: grab a tray that's deep enough for your favourite ice cream tubs, and fill the gaps with ice to prevent your ice cream from melting. Put the tray in the middle of your board, and surround it with every ice cream topping you can think of; cookie dough bites, marshmallows, sprinkles, chocolate sauce, cake bites and berries are all excellent options. Add some wafer cones or bowls for serving.
Hot chocolate board

For a deliciously decadent hot chocolate board, all you need is some good quality hot chocolate and your favourite toppings (we like marshmallows, freshly whipped cream, berries, chocolate chips, wafers and chocolate shavings). You could even flavour your drink with cinnamon, orange, chilli or mint.

For the ultimate indulgent sharer, fill a board with your favourite cakes and desserts. Depending on how much time you have (and your level of baking skills) you can make your own, use store-bought cakes, or provide a tempting mix of both. Add macarons, biscuits, tarts, a selection of mousses in small glasses, and whatever other sweet treats you can lay your hands on.
Rainbow fruit salad board
![](https://loveincorporated.blob.core.windows.net/contentimages/gallery/6de9bed0-dbaf-4505-b119-5ae83e4aa1ef-20.jpg)
A rainbow fruit salad board is tasty and healthy. Use cookie cutters to shape the fruit, arrange by colour, or simply scatter it however you think looks best. For even more deliciousness, pair your spread with melted chocolate or caramel sauce, or try grilling some of your fruit to amp up the flavours.
Super-sweet board

For a sweet treat that's perfect for a romantic occasion, make a pink-and-red grazing board using heart-shaped sweets. This is an easy board that will only take a quick trip to the shops. You can use heart-shaped ramekins to make the board extra pretty.
Mini pavlova board
![](https://loveincorporated.blob.core.windows.net/contentimages/gallery/78131b68-7dec-4470-b0d9-ddfcbeb9c8cf-27.jpg)
For this board, you'll need some meringue cups, a selection of fruit and a bowl of freshly whipped cream. Want to whip your cream ahead of time? Add a teaspoon of unflavoured gelatine to a teaspoon of cold water, and let it stand for a few minutes. Microwave the mixture for a few seconds until it turns into a liquid (but ensure it isn’t too hot), then add it to your cream as you whip it. This will keep your cream fresh for up to two days.
