Brodburger, various locations, Australian Capital Territory

Brodburger started out as a burger van – and it now has four permanent locations in the suburbs of Canberra. There's a burger for everyone, including plenty of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. Inventive handhelds include a crumbed chicken breast burger with piri piri mayo (pictured), a lamb burger with tzatziki, tomato relish and feta, and a Beyond Meat burger with vegan cheese, vegan aioli and avocado.
Bar Luca, Sydney, New South Wales

Reserve a table at the trendy Bar Luca for cocktails, unusual burgers and mouthwatering sides. It has options like the Magic Mushroom burger, featuring a Southern fried mushroom, American cheese, lettuce, black garlic aioli and chilli jam, and the Blame Canada burger (pictured), with a beef patty, American cheese, maple-glazed streaky bacon, aioli and poutine. There are sister restaurants in Darlinghurst and Parramatta.
Bloodhound Espresso, Darlinghurst, New South Wales

There's more to the menu at friendly neighbourhood brunch spot Bloodhound Espresso than burgers, but the Bloody Mary Burger is a crowd favourite for a reason. It's a beef patty topped with American cheese, sriracha bacon, pickles, onions, lettuce and Bloody Mary ketchup, all slotted inside a pillowy bun. Customers say you won't find better in Sydney.
Chebbo’s Burgers, Sydney, New South Wales

Chebbo's speciality? Smashburgers with crispy, lacy edges and a delicious char. With locations in Marrickville and Roselands, this Sydney favourite has amassed plenty of fans (not to mention a significant social media following). Chebbo's small menu means its burgers are always fresh and fast paced, and the cheeseburger is the one to go for – order it, and you’ll get a beef patty, American cheese, pickles, onion and Chebbo’s special sauce on a soft milk bun.
Paul's Famous Hamburgers, Sydney, New South Wales

Paul's Famous Hamburgers dates back to 1957, when people would travel from all over Sydney to visit the small hole-in-the-wall burger joint. The business has grown since then, but you can still expect a queue of customers outside. One of the spot's most popular burgers is the Famous Works (pictured), which comes topped with lettuce, tomato, raw onion, tomato sauce, egg, bacon, cheese and pineapple.
Patty Shack Burger Bar, Darwin, Northern Territory

There are some fancy options on the menu at Patty Shack – including the Matterhorn, with Swiss cheese, mushrooms, onion jam and Memphis mustard – but if you ask us, there’s really no need to complicate things. The simpler OG and Classic Smash burgers nail the basics, with succulent 100% Aussie beef, burger cheese, onions and pickles, and no extra fuss. Customers also rate the vegan burger, made with Beyond Meat and plant-based cheese.
Ze Pickle, Gold Coast, Queensland

Named for its towering pickle-topped burgers, playful joint Ze Pickle previously had a handful of locations across Queensland, but it's now a single outlet in the Gold Coast suburb of Burleigh Heads. Here, you can expect giant creations such as Kanye's Mum, which comprises a beef patty topped with fried cheese sticks, gooey American cheese and truffle butter. The menu also features chicken burgers and a selection of kids' meals.
Broken Hearts Burger Club, various locations, Queensland

Growing from a pop-up to 10 bricks-and-mortar locations, this purveyor of classic smashburgers has picked up a strong following. Keeping it simple really is the philosophy here; even the ‘fancy’ burgers just upgrade the basic option (American cheese, pickles and signature sauce) with the addition of tomato and lettuce. Single, double and triple burgers allow customers to go as meaty as they want – and the cheesy fries, topped with tangy melted cheese, are a popular side.
Ben’s Burgers, Brisbane, Queensland

After arriving on Brisbane’s burger scene in 2014, Ben’s classic burgers and gooey chilli cheese fries soon created a buzz. This joint keeps things simple with options like Classic burgers, Cheesy burgers and Crispy Chicken burgers, pairing juicy beef and chicken with tried-and-tested garnishes and condiments – think lettuce, tomato, ketchup and mustard. The milkshakes here get a lot of attention too (chocolate peanut butter and salted caramel are favourites).
Longboards Laidback Eatery & Bar, Surfers Paradise, Queensland

Longboards Laidback Eatery & Bar has everything: ocean views, refreshing drinks and a choice of wagyu beef, seafood, chicken and vegetarian burgers. Creative options include the Budgie Smuggler, which comes with wagyu beef, lettuce, tomato, beetroot, onions, cheese and an egg. Easy Street Diner, Gold Coast, Queensland

Everyone who visits the Gold Coast's Easy Street Diner has wonderful things to say about its burgers. There are some extremely decadent options on offer here, such as The Pigmac (a pulled pork, mac ’n’ cheese and barbecue sauce burger), and the Cheezie Boi (pictured), which comes loaded with buttermilk tenders, halloumi, bacon, cheese sauce and baconnaise.
Hashtag Burgers and Waffles, Brisbane, Queensland

You can have your patty in a standard burger bun at this hip Brisbane joint – but why would you, when you can get it between two waffles? Hashtag's juicy burgers, with cheeky names like Pickle Me Elmo (a pickle-laden beef patty) and Fried Chooky Chook (crispy chicken thigh with chilli jam), are complemented by a range of hearty sides. And if you don’t go for the waffle burger experience, you can get deep-fried, cinnamon sugar–dusted waffle sticks for dessert.
Cairns Burger Cafe, Cairns City, Queensland

This casual café in Cairns City wins rave reviews for both its burgers and its great customer service. Favourites at the Cairns Burger Cafe include The Ultimate (pictured), featuring a double patty, cheese, bacon, egg, onion rings, relish and lettuce, and the Mediterranean, which comes loaded up with lettuce, Spanish onion, feta, sweet onion jam, smashed avocado and spicy mayo.
Bread & Bone Wood Grill, Adelaide, South Australia

You can expect to find some seriously sophisticated burgers at trendy spot Bread & Bone Wood Grill. Options include the hefty 300 (pictured), which features a 300g medium-rare beef patty topped with cheese, onion rings and salad. If in doubt, though, opt for the crowd-pleasing Buttermilk Fried Chicken Burger, loaded with smoked bacon, pickles, salad and ranch sauce.
Good Burger, Adelaide, South Australia

Burger seekers love the atmosphere at Good Burger in Adelaide, saying it’s inviting and comfortable. This place got its start in 2024, and it quickly set up partnerships with other businesses in the area. There are lots of tasty options to get stuck into here; try the Daw Park, a cheesy delight topped with raclette, shallots, cornichons, mustard and tomato relish, or the sweet-spicy chicken burger with hot honey and on-trend Kewpie mayo.
Nordburger, Adelaide, South Australia

If you’re looking for a good burger at a great price in South Australia, Nordburger is the place to go. For something traditional, choose the Royale, a double beef burger with cheese, caramelised onions and pickles – or, for something a little different, try the Big Kahuna (pictured), a beef burger with bacon, grilled pineapple and cheese. There are locations in Norwood and Hindmarsh, both suburbs of Adelaide.
The Winston, Hobart, Tasmania

If you're looking for a cool bar with a laidback vibe and amazing burgers, head to The Winston. Its burgers come fully loaded, like this chipotle-infused beef patty with cheese, garlic mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion and guacamole. Other menu highlights include the Southern-style chicken burger with tomato, lettuce, onion and chipotle mayo, and the vegan Shammy – two Beyond Meat patties, vegan cheese, lettuce, onion, pickles and vegan special sauce, served double-decker style.
Jack Greene, Battery Point, Tasmania

A casual pub known for its delicious burgers, Jack Greene has it all – there's a cheeseburger, a blue cheeseburger, a pulled pork burger, a lamb burger and a chicken burger, and you can even get your hands on cute miniature burgers. There are weekly specials, too, including the likes of a sticky spiced pork belly burger with salad, pickles, jalapeños, chilli flakes and pork crackling (pictured).
Billy’s Burgers and Bar, Hobart, Tasmania

The eponymous Billy started slinging burgers from a van, but these days you can find him right on Hobart’s waterfront in a bricks-and-mortar eatery. From the classics to Billy’s own inventions, every burger on the menu comes with a beautiful view – fries and a drink optional. Looking for a challenge? Check out The Beast, a monster of a burger with a triple beef patty, triple cheese and double bacon, plus ketchup, Billy’s special sauce, beetroot, pickles and caramelised onions.
Preachers, Hobart, Tasmania

Regulars sing the praises of Preachers, where the food is just as impressive as the selection of drinks. They say the vegetarian options here are top tier, and that the halloumi burger (which pairs the squeaky cheese with sweet potato, zingy pickled onion and sweet chilli mayo) is the best of the lot. The atmosphere is buzzing too, with seats available inside, out in the garden or on the decommissioned bus parked up outside.
8bit, Melbourne, Victoria

Burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes and loaded sides are what you'll find at computer-themed fast food chain 8bit. You'll probably want a side of potato gems, so all that remains to do is to decide on your burger. Customers recommend the Zelda (a chickpea, corn and quinoa patty with American cheese, beetroot relish, grilled halloumi, avocado, lettuce and sauce) and the Golden Axe (with crispy fried chicken, cheese, sriracha, mayo and slaw).
The Bottle of Milk, Lorne, Victoria

The Bottle of Milk knows what it’s doing when it comes to gourmet burgers. The menu here features a wide selection of beef, chicken and vegetarian options. The restaurant's standout burgers include the What a Pickle, a beef burger with cheese, dill pickles, mayo, relish, mustard and salad, and the Tofu Burger, which comes loaded with shredded carrot, and chilli and satay sauces.
Andrew's Hamburgers, Melbourne, Victoria

Andrew's Hamburgers has been dishing out crowd-pleasing burgers since 1939. There's a long list of options on the menu, such as the Five O Hawaiian (pineapple, cheese, beetroot and salad) and the Sanchez Mexican (jalapeños, sour cream, cheese, salad and hot sauce), which come with your choice of patty (beef, steak, vegetarian or chicken). Andrew’s Burger (pictured), a beef patty with an egg, bacon, cheese, cooked onions, salad and sauce, is widely considered the best.
Beast, Melbourne, Victoria

Beast invites you to ‘join our cult’, and you won’t regret getting drawn in by its tempting burgers. The menu features a classic burger for the less adventurous, but if you’re looking for something different, you’re not short of choices. The Ron Swanson gets regular mentions in reviews – customers can't get enough of the combination of Gruyère and Jack Cheddar cheeses, caramelised onion, bacon, spicy horseradish aioli and rich roast chicken reduction, all smothered over a quality wagyu beef patty. They love that many burgers can be made veggie or vegan, too.
Royale, Melbourne, Victoria

Royale (previously The Royale Brothers) is located in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton, and it's loved by customers for its speedy service and tasty American-style burgers. A burger counter turned modern diner, the spot serves a menu of beef, fish, chicken and vegan burgers. Highlights include the Bacon Royale, featuring a beef patty, bacon, double cheese, tomato, onion, pickles, mustard, mayo and special Royale sauce.
Hoodburger, Perth, Western Australia

After years of pop-ups, Hoodburger has settled into permanent spots in Northbridge, Applecross, Duncraig and Inglewood, and reviews are almost exclusively excellent. Here, you'll find creative beef and chicken burgers such as the Hot Tender Sandwich (with cheese, pickles, jalapeños and smoky mayo), and the juicy Deluxe Cheeseburger.
Occy’s, Dunsborough, Western Australia

A cosy pub in the Margaret River area, Occy’s is the perfect stop for burgers and refreshments. Its Beef Burger with fries and aioli gets rave reviews – and if you like spice, the habanero aioli is a great topping choice. Punters also love the Southern-spiced Chicken Burger. Occy's offers plenty of kids' activities too, including face painting, so it's ideal for family outings.
Short Order Burger Co., Perth and Fremantle, Western Australia

For juicy, flavoursome burgers in Perth and Fremantle, Short Order Burger Co. has you covered; its organic beef patties are served on brioche buns with extra-fancy trimmings. The Cheese Burger features smoked mozzarella and Cheddar, while the BBQ Bacon Cheese Burger comes with candied bacon and barbecue sauce. The joint also sometimes serves a fried chicken and truffle burger special (pictured).
Chich Small Bar, Perth, Western Australia

Burgers go Balkan at Chich Small Bar, where regular patties are swapped for beef pljeskavica, a burger-like grilled dish hailing from Serbia. Some fun influences from the US and elsewhere come into play too; there are creations like the Texas burger (with smoky barbecue onions and habanero sauce) and the Godfather Deluxe, which sees Cheddar, coppa (Italian dry-cured pork), gherkins and salad piled onto a pljeskavica patty with a special ‘godfather sauce’.

Bad Love Burger Co grew from a pop-up credited for bringing the smashburger to Perth. The joint continues to sell thin, juicy double beef burgers with lacy edges, and it also has an impressive selection of chicken and veggie burgers. The Cherry Bomb is a customer favourite, featuring double cheese, pickles, onion, a sweet, smoky and spicy cherry-chipotle barbecue sauce and comeback sauce (a creamy condiment from Mississippi).
Betty’s Burgers, various locations

Founded in Noosa, Queensland, and now with outposts across Australia, Betty’s Burgers receives outstanding reviews. There are beef, fried and grilled chicken, and plant-based options available, plus a variety of toppings – including bacon, cheese, smashed avocado and beetroot. Customers also love the Thickshakes (made with frozen custard ice cream) which come in flavours such as chocolate, peanut butter and vanilla.
