Taste test: supermarket burgers

What are the best burgers in the supermarkets this summer? loveFOOD puts nine to the test.

No one should have to endure a disappointing burger. There are precious few weeks in the year to enjoy them in the sunshine, so it's important to choose right.

That's why loveFOOD has rounded up nine supermarkets' offerings for a summer taste test. We've chomped, chewed and critiqued so you don't have to. Read on to find out which burger is the best.

9: Morrisons

Morrisons received a very unremarkable score for its British Beef Quarter Pounders. "Tastes processed", "a bit greasy" and "could do with slightly more seasoning", according to our tasters. We're not very impressed.

5.4/10
RRP £2.79 for four

8: Tesco

Tesco's Beef Quarter Pounders didn't do much better. "Bit bland", "gristly" and "chewy" said some, although one person said it had a "decent flavour and texture".

5.7/10
RRP £3 for four (two packs for £5)

7: Waitrose

Despite their pedigree, these Aberdeen Angus Beef Quarter Pounders from Waitrose couldn't raise enthusiasm from the tasters. The burgers were described as not having much flavour, and being nothing special, while also being rather chewy.

5.8/10
RRP £2.86 for four

6: Lidl

"Soft texture" and "good flavour" couldn't save Lidl's Scotch Beef Quarter Pounders from a mediocre score. "Tastes cheap" commented one person, while another said it was solid but not spectacular.

6/10
RRP £2.99 for four (two packs for £5)

5: Asda

These Butcher's Selection Quarter Pounders had a decent consistency, let down by bland flavour lacking in meatiness. "Like school dinners" quipped one unimpressed taster. However others commented that they weren't so bad, and they also looked quite good too.

6.3/10
RRP £3.00 for four

3=: Sainsbury's

Although these were all fresh burgers, one taster wasn't pleased and said it reminded them of the frozen burgers of their childhood. We used Sainsbury's Reduced Fat Beef Quarter Pounders for our test, so these were a bit of a wildcard but actually impressed most of the tasters – up to a point.

6.4/10
RRP £3.00 for four (two packs for £5)

3=: Marks & Spencer

Marks and Spencer's Ultimate Steak Burgers aren't as ultimate as the retailer might have hoped, coming joint third and sharing the bronze with Sainsbury's. They're not bad at all, but some people suggested they didn't have enough seasoning, while others commented that they were rather chewy.

6.4/10
RRP £5 for two

2: Co-op

A peppery aftertaste and "lovely" overall flavour takes Co-op's British Beef Quarter Pounders into second place. These "pack a meatier punch" than their rivals but suffer from being too dry and not having the most appealing appearance. They are good value for money though, as Co-op are selling half a dozen for three quid.

6.6/10
RRP £3 for six

1: Aldi

Aldi's Aberdeen Angus Gourmet Burgers were by far and away the favourite of our test. With a moreish flavour and excellent texture, they were the favourite of the majority of our tasters, earning high scores from most of them. "Beautiful!" said one person, while another described them as "juicy and meaty." A good effort, even if it isn't going to redefine the world of burgers.

7.5/10
RRP £2.25 for two
