Taste test: the best plain Easter eggs for 2015
This is Lovefood’s fourth annual Easter egg taste test. Who eggscelled this year?
Whose eggs are best this Easter? In this blind taste test, we took on a dozen ‘normal’ milk chocolate eggs – those without adulterations and additions like popping candy or mint.
This is all about the chocolate. Which eggs proved their worth?
12: Mars & Friends Egg
“Shockingly bad” is the comment that sums up the general reaction to this egg. Slightly greasy, with an odd pale colour, it’s really not enjoyable. The question “is it really chocolate?” was also posed.

=10: Tesco Milk Chocolate Egg
Drawing with Asda, Tesco’s egg is pretty insipid but not as offensive as Mars’s. No one had much to say about this egg, which in itself says quite a lot about its quality. “Poor texture” and “a bit artificial tasting” were two of the few opinions voiced.

=10: Asda Extra Special Colour Splash Egg
Despite looking quite attractive with its colourfully drizzled decoration, this one was fairly tasteless. “Tastes cheap” and “average”. Looks really aren’t everything, as this egg proves.

9: Cadbury’s Freddo Faces Egg
This egg fared worse than its larger counterpart for some reason. Some thought it was too sweet, while others simply said it was “nothing special.” One person rated it 0 out of 10 – simply calling it “awful”.

8: Lindt Lindor Luxury Milk Chocolate Egg
Lindt’s egg didn’t fare very well, with people picking up on an “artificial” taste while another called it “oily” and a third said the taste had a “weird edge to it”. There were a few positive comments, but these were largely outweighed by the negatives.

7: Munchies Gift Tin Egg
“Synthetic” was one description of this egg, with a “horrible texture”, but it found some support for a “creamy” mouthfeel from some. Not terrible overall, but not fantastic either. Comes with a small tin of Munchies, which are probably nicer than the egg itself.

6: Lidl Favorina Egg
It didn’t get a great score, but Lidl’s Favorina egg, for all its plain looks, actually did rather well compared to the majority. “Creamy and delicious” “cheap taste” “gross” “sweet” – a varied reaction leading to an average score in the end.

=4: Hotel Chocolat ‘Scrambled Egg’
This one looks really pretty, and actually has a small amount of dark and milk chocolate drizzled on its surface, not that you'd particularly know, although some testers appreciated the “slight bitterness” the dark choc brought along with it.
However, others said it tastes “cheap”, and although it was agreed it looks great, many were underwhelmed when it came to flavour. The pralines that accompany it are very nice, but those didn’t count for our test.

=4: Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Egg
Cadbury’s larger egg matched Hotel Chocolat’s score and beat Freddo, though a few people thought it to be overly sweet and have a “chalky” flavour and “weird aftertaste”. Those who enjoyed it called it “creamy” and “moreish” and its overall score was alright, but not stunning.

3: Aldi Moser Roth Drizzled Pink Egg
The pink decoration doesn’t taste of anything, but the chocolate does. People thought it was a little more balanced and believed it to have a higher cocoa content than many of the other eggs, but others said it was too sweet and had a “thin” taste.

=1: Sainsbury’s Milk Chocolate Egg
Sainsbury’s matches Yorkie for quality at the top spot, with a “velvety” texture and “classic creamy taste”. Its “delicate” flavour got it almost top marks from a few tasters, though a couple of detractors thought it was “bland”.

=1: Yorkie Egg
This Yorkie Egg had a slightly “sharp” flavour according to one, but others said it tasted “light”, which is fairly ironic considering Yorkie’s macho marketing. Still, it did well, but Sainsbury’s egg is much cheaper per 100g. This does come with three Yorkie bars though, while the Sainsbury’s egg comes with some painfully sweet (in my opinion only) éclair sweets.

Which to pick…
No egg did particularly well – a score of just over six out of ten isn’t really that great. However, it wouldn’t be Easter without chocolate eggs, so we hope our test will help you to make an eggsellent choice. If you can't stand shop-bought eggs, you can also have a stab at making your own!
