Taste test: GoodLife vegetarian sausages
These new veggie sausages promise some interesting flavour combinations. But how tasty are they?
GoodLife have a new range of vegetarian sausages out that they reckon would even tempt a carnivore. However, instead of trying to imitate the meaty versions, these sausages use a different selection of savoury flavours. We put them to the test in the Lovefood kitchen.
Will it be thumbs up or thumbs down for the range? We’ve given our verdict on all four flavours below.
Beetroot and feta
The worst of the bunch. The surprise appearance of chunks of beetroot add texture, but not in a good way. "It's a soft sausage," said one of our tasters, "then you suddenly get to a chunky bit. It's like beetroot is the gristle." Another commented that it tasted like Play-Doh.
(Resounding) Thumbs down
Tomato and basil
Texture and rich tomato flavour did well, as did the texture. Some criticised it for being too dry, and one person said that it was "nice, but really you can't taste anything but the tomatoes."
(Cautious) Thumbs up
Cauliflower and mature cheddar
The cauliflower and cheese combo doesn't work as it should because the cheese just doesn't come through strongly enough to make an impact. In a perfect world, this would be a cauliflower cheese bake wrapped up in a sausage, but it's dry and the seasoning isn't brilliant.
Thumbs down
French bean and spinach
The clear favourite of the four, it was praised for its "nice seasoning, good texture and strong flavour", though some didn't like the somewhat "chunky" texture. This one was also criticised for being dry by a couple of people. It doesn't hold its shape in the oven as it has a tendency to burst, but this was by far the top sausage from the range, although that arguably isn't saying much.
Thumbs up
All in all, a very mixed reaction with GoodLife's sausages winning very few converts.
