World Pasty Championships winners
There was much competitive crimping at the inaugural Eden Project competition.
There were over 100 entries from around the world for the inaugural World Pasty Championships held at the Eden Project last weekend.
Entrants were assessed in four categories (taste, texture, appearance and, of course, pasty crimp) by no fewer than 21 judges.
The very appropriately-named Graham Cornish (pictured above), who works for Ginsters, arguably the most famous pasty makers, carried off two awards. His traditional skirt beef and vegetable creation won the Professional Cornish Pasty category.
Meanwhile, his more esoteric smoked fish, parsley, saffron and Cornish clotted cream creation scooped the Professional Open Savoury prize.
Billy Deakin of Mount Hawke won the Amateur Cornish Pasty category. Suzanne Manson of Bristol’s pasty containing wild rabbit poached in cider and leeks with peas and lemon zest won the Amateur Open Savoury trophy.
All of the entrants in the two Cornish pasty categories had to conform to the traditional recipe that forms part of its Protected Geographical Indication.
