Is cream cheese tea the worst food trend of the year so far?

It's only March and we're already getting concerned...

If you thought drinks couldn't get any crazier than lattes served in avocado peels, then brace yourselves, there's a new hipster trend on the block – cheese tea.

Unappetising to most, cheese tea is an iced black or green tea that's topped with a creamy cheese foam made from milk, whipped cream and... cream cheese. It's beaten with evaporated milk until it begins to froth and is finished with a pinch of rock salt.

Invented in Taiwan, the drink initially gained momentum in Singapore and Hong Kong and before finding popularity in the UK. More and more cafés have recently started to embrace the trend. At London branches of the popular Taiwanese bubble tea chain Happy Lemon, there are even four different flavours on the menu. These include green tea with salted cheese and chocolate with salted cheese.

Although the combinations sound jarring, enthusiasts of this new fad claim the cheese gives the tea a creamier, more savoury flavour. What's more, converts say cheese tea is best enjoyed slurped straight from the cup without stirring, allowing you to taste the two distinct layers.

It's a 'thanks, but no thanks' from us. We'll pass on this one and stick to the Earl Grey.
