What do you eat on Christmas Eve?

Do you have a traditional meal that you always cook up for Christmas Eve?

Christmas has a fairly set menu for most: slices of turkey, boiled sprouts and crispy roast potatoes, followed by Christmas pudding and cake.

And Boxing Day is the turkey sandwich day, though quite a lot of people also cook up a big ham to see them through until New Year’s Eve and add some variety to the menu.

But what’s best to eat on Christmas Eve?

Elsewhere, it’s a big deal

In many parts of Europe, Christmas Eve is the big event, where presents are exchanged and good food enjoyed. This tends to be a meal that doesn’t include any meat.

Over here, we don’t follow the same tradition, and enjoy a big Christmas dinner on the day itself. I’m not sure how many people give a lot of thought to the meal before Christmas, but the fact that I can’t remember the Christmas Eve meals I’ve had in recent years suggests that I, at least, don’t.

I do tend to enjoy a mince pie or two, and when I was younger my family had a fireplace, so we often indulged in roast chestnuts too. But there was no big fanfare for the meal, as we were saving ourselves for the next day.
