For this low fat v original taste test, we put Cheddar cheese up against a reduced fat version. Which version came out on top?
Cheddar cheese: Waitrose Essential medium Cheddar v Waitrose Essential reduced fat medium Cheddar
The difference: your standard lump of Cheddar cheese contains 34% fat (of which 22% is saturates), while the Waitrose reduced fat version is 23% fat (of which 14% is saturates). A sizeable difference for the exact same ingredients.
The test: six tasters tested the two varieties. They were not told beforehand what the difference between the varieties was, so it was a completely blind test.
The result: normal wins, by four votes to two. Those that preferred the low fat version said it was ‘slightly more solid’, but the majority favoured the ‘richer flavour’ of the full fat version. Although we didn’t tell anyone that it was a low fat versus original taste test, a couple of people did guess that one of the cheese samples had to be low fat.
Conclusion: Lovefood is happy with both. You do save yourself a lot of saturated fat if you go lighter, but then the best part about cheese is how rich and creamy it is.
