For this low sugar v original taste test, we put original Alpen muesli against its no added sugar counterpart. Which came out on top?
Muesli: Alpen original v Alpen no added sugar
The difference: Alpen original contains 360 calories per 100g and 67g carbohydrates per 100g (23g of which are sugars), while Alpen no added sugar contains 355 calories per 100g and 65g carbohydrates per 100g (16g of which are sugars). Other than the added sugar, the ingredients are almost identical for each box. There’s actually ever-so-slightly less fat in the original cereal.
The test: six tasters tested the two varieties. They were not told beforehand what the difference between the varieties was, so it was a completely blind test.
The result: no added sugar wins. Congratulations Alpen! Three people preferred a bowl of no added sugar muesli, two people liked original best, and one person said they tasted too similar to decide.
Those that preferred no added sugar said that it had ‘a stronger flavour’ and was ‘less dusty’, whereas lovers of the original brand praised it for being ‘easier to eat’ and ‘leaving a sweeter aftertaste’.
Conclusion: this one totally depends on how sweet your tooth is. Because the ingredients in both cereals are the same apart from the added sugar. If you haven’t got a sweet tooth, lovefood thinks that it’s worth getting the healthier option for the sake of your teeth.
