For this low fat v original taste test, we put whole milk natural yoghurt up against a lower-fat version. Which came out on top?

Natural yoghurt: Waitrose organic whole milk natural yoghurt v Waitrose low fat natural yoghurt

The difference: whole milk natural yoghurt contains 80 calories per 100g and 4.4g fat (2.8g of which are saturates) per 100g, whereas the low fat version has 68 calories per 100g and 1.2g fat (0.7g of which are saturates) per 100g. That’s four times as much saturated fat in the whole milk version.

The test: six tasters tested the two varieties. They were not told beforehand what the difference between the varieties was, so it was a completely blind test.

The result: original wins. Three people prefer original, two like low fat, and one can’t decide. Those that picked whole milk said that it was ‘richer in flavour’, ‘creamier’, and ‘nicer in taste’; but the low fat version apparently had ‘a much better aftertaste’ and was ‘lighter in texture’.

Conclusion: a close result, this one. It seems simple: if you like thicker yoghurt, go for whole milk, but if you prefer it lighter and runnier, go for low fat – especially when it contains considerably less saturated fat. Lovefood approves of both options.
