Would you eat a roast dinner in a Cornish pasty?

Roast dinner Cornish pasties have arrived, and they are bound to raise the eyebrows of pasty purists.

The Cornish pasty is one of Cornwall’s proudest exports. The recipe is guarded with care and the ingredient list extremely strict: swede, potato, onion, beef skirt and black pepper only.

Now a Cornish bakery is launching their own variation on the classic which is likely to shock pasty purists: it has a roast dinner filling.

Warren’s Bakery, the world’s oldest Cornish pasty maker established in 1860, has launched two new flavours: roast beef & horseradish and roast chicken with sage stuffing. All pasties will be hand crimped at the bakery and are filled with fresh veg, such broccoli and carrot, in a major variation from the original recipe.

The Cornish pasty is an important regional food, and has been given special EU protected status as a vital cultural marker for the region. There are strict guidelines that dictate how they can and cannot be made and what can go in them.

Warren's Bakery are careful not to call their new creation a Cornish pasty, and have instead used the traditional recipe as the inspiration for their new winter offering.

“Our Cornish pasties are an iconic dish in the South West and we are immensely proud to be the home of the longest reigning original recipe” says Master Baker Jason Jobling. “As the Sunday roast is also such an integral and well-loved dish, which is a huge part of Great Britain’s national identity, we felt it was high time it was given a Warren's Bakery twist.”

The new status quo-busting snacks will be available in over 50 bakeries in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Bristol, Birmingham and Hampshire, and are priced from £3.40.

For an extra £1, you can get a side of roast potatoes.
