Nutella-filled steamed buns recipe

Serve straight out of a bamboo steamer while the Nutella's still oozing. To reheat, place buns back in a hot steamer for a few minutes until piping hot.  For advice on shaping the buns, see this video demo. For more on breads you can make without an oven see this post.

Step-by-step

  1. Cut out at least 16 squares of baking paper, each 2" by 2".
  2. Measure all the ingredients into a large bowl and mix well until you form a firm dough and there is no more flour at the bottom of the bowl.
  3. Tip the dough onto your work surface (don't flour the surface as this will change the dough-to-water ratio) and knead for 8-10 minutes until the dough feels springy and elastic.
  4. Return the dough to the bowl, cover the bowl with clingfilm and leave to rise for 1-1.5 hours in a warm place, until the dough has roughly doubled.
  5. Using measuring scales, divide the dough into 30g balls and cover lightly with clingfilm to stop them drying out.
  6. One by one, roll out each ball into a circle (3 inches across) using a rolling pin. Place a teaspoon of Nutella into the centre of the circle, then pinch the edges of the circle around the Nutella to form a pouch-shaped bun. Place the bun on a baking paper square and cover again with clingfilm while you shape the rest.
  7. Steam buns in a steamer (or bamboo steamer set over a wok filled with hot water) for 10 minutes. You may need to steam the buns in batches.
