Blood orange Screwdriver cocktail recipe

A lesson in sophisticated simplicity, the classic Screwdriver cocktail comprises a perfect pairing of vodka and freshly squeezed orange juice, with Angostura bitters adding a dash of complexity to the drink.

Inspired by drag queen Bimini Bon Boulash, a finalist in the 2021 series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK, here Greg Bailey and Alice Wood’s recipe gives the original Screwdriver a bright and bold update, thanks to blood orange juice. With its distinctive crimson colour and sweet-tart flavour, this particular tipple offers an appreciative nod to Bimini’s vibrant personality, flair for fashion and love for doing things differently.

Just the ticket if you’re in the mood for a simple but seriously refreshing livener, the recipe features in Greg and Alice's book, the beautifully illustrated DRAGTAILS: Fierce Cocktails Inspired by Drag Royalty, a unique collection packed with cocktail recipes inspired by popular drag queens.

Things to note:

For a mocktail, omit the Angostura bitters and substitute the vodka for a non-alcoholic spirit alternative.

For best results, use freshly squeezed blood orange juice and plenty of ice.

For a sweeter drink, add 5ml (1tsp) of simple syrup (simmer equal parts sugar and water until the sugar fully dissolves, then leave to cool completely).
