Rooibos tea makes an excellent base for this high-protein smoothie made with antioxidant-rich frozen berries; it’s brilliant as part of a workout routine.
Variations
Rooibos, Strawberry and Orange Smoothie
Make the Rooibos and Berry Smoothie, replacing the berries with 150 g (5 ¼ oz) frozen strawberries and ½ a peeled and chopped orange.
Nutritional tip: Rooibos tea is tannin-free and contains 9 essential trace minerals.
Rooibos Nutty Smoothie
Prepare the Rooibos and Berry Smoothie, replacing the tofu with 125 ml (4 ¼ fl oz) almond milk and 1 tablespoon smooth peanut, cashew, or almond butter.
Shopping tip: A wide range of nut butters is available in good health shops or good supermarkets.
Fruit Tea Smoothie
Make the Rooibos and Berry Smoothie, replacing the rooibos tea bag with a mixed red berry tea bag.
Handy tip: Don’t be sceptical about using silken tofu in smoothies. It adds a lovely creamy richness.

- 1 rooibos tea bag
- 125 ml very hot (not boiling) water
- 225 g frozen mixed berries
- 125 g silken tofu
- 1 tbsp vanilla protein powder
- 1 tsp liquid honey, optional

Step-by-step
- Put the rooibos bag in a teapot or heatproof jug and pour over the water. Steep for 8 to 10 minutes, then remove the bag. Leave to cool.
- Put the tea, berries, tofu and protein powder into a blender and process until smooth. Sweeten to taste with honey and pour into glasses. Serve immediately or transfer to a thermos.
