Low fat v original: bread

Updated on 15 January 2013 | 0 Comments

For this low fat v original taste test, we put a regular loaf of wholemeal up against its 'Nimble' brother. Which came out on top?

Bread: Hovis Wholemeal v Hovis Nimble Wholemeal

The difference:  regular Hovis wholemeal contains 86 calories per slice, whereas the Nimble version is just 48 calories per slice. The latter also only has 0.6g fat per slice, compared to 1.1g. Interestingly, there are less ingredients in the Nimble loaf than there are in regular Hovis.

The test: six tasters tested the two varieties. They were not told beforehand what the difference between the varieties was, so it was a completely blind test.

The result: normal wins. No-one picks Nimble as their favourite, due to the obvious differences in taste. Nimble was ‘devoid of flavour’, ‘very bland’ and ‘not enjoyable’. Mind you, no-one had anything particularly good to say about the original Hovis either – it was just the better of the two.

Conclusion: buy real bread. 'Diet bread’ is never going to taste as good as the normal kind, in our opinion anyway. If you want a healthier loaf, try rye or spelt bread instead.
