Best of three: Cranberry sauces

Updated on 12 December 2012 | 0 Comments

It's as obligatory to a Christmas dinner as the turkey itself, but who does the best cranberry sauce?

Tracklements Cranberry Sauce with Port

Open the jar of this sauce, which is made in Wiltshire, and you’ll get a strong whiff of vinegar and that fruity cranberry scent. Sliced cranberries punctuate a glistening pink sauce and add an interesting bite. It’s sweet and jammy but that savoury edge from the vinegar, lemon juice and port perfectly balance, making it ideal for chicken or turkey.
Best for? Those that like it sweet and to keep it real, without actually going to the trouble of cooking it yourself.
Lovefood.com tip: (Psst… pour this into a pretty dish and you could get away with calling this homemade).

How much? Prices start from £3 for a 250g jar. Tracklements is available online or at selected delis across the UK.

Duchy Originals Organic Cranberry Sauce with Port

This sauce is dark and brooding and has a really strong cranberry smell. The texture is quite firm and rough – less a sauce and more a chutney. There are whole, small berries littered throughout and the taste is pure cranberry – bittersweet. The grown-up choice.
Best for? Those that like it posh and organic, and those with a savoury tooth.
Lovefood.com tip: Because of its bitter edge, it would be great in a camembert tart.
How much? A 200g jar costs £2.75 from Waitrose stores across the UK.

The Relish in Spice Co Luxury Cranberry Sauce

Made to an award-winning recipe in Sussex, this luxury cranberry sauce looks authentic. It’s quite jellied, much how the Americans like it, with tender berries dotted throughout. It because much looser with a whip of a fork. This is as traditional a sauce, in look and flavour, as you’re going to get. There is some redcurrant jelly in there but the natural acidity of both fruits really complement each other.
Best for? Traditionalists. There’s no mucking about here and it tastes all the better for it. It’s also suitable for vegans.
Lovefood.com tip: Be sure to add a big dollop of it to your gravy, which of course will be homemade.
How much? A 175g jar costs from £2.25 and is available online or from delis across the UK.
