Lidl takes home Grocer of the Year at the Grocer Gold awards.

Discounter Lidl has pushed rival Aldi out of the top spot at the Grocer magazine's annual Gold awards, receiving the award for Grocer of the Year for the first time.

Ronny Gottschlicht, managing director of Lidl, said that he was “flattered” and “delighted for the team” that they had won the award.

Tesco won Britain’s Favourite Supermarket, craft brewer BrewDog took home the award for the SME Drinks Brand of the Year, and Oddbins managed to secure the accolade for Drinks Retailer of the Year.

Food awards

The Grocer is far from the only organisation to dish out awards to Britain’s food retailers and producers. Here are a few more recent results.

Which?

Although the Grocer Gold awards named Tesco as Britain’s Favourite Supermarket, a recent Which? survey suggested otherwise, naming Waitrose as the nation’s favourite. The upmarket retailer edged ahead of Aldi to take the title.

The Which? Awards 2015, however, named Aldi as the Best Supermarket.

Retailer of the Year

In last year’s Retailer of the Year awards, the Multiple Community Retailer of the Year was Asda, while Waitrose took the Highly Commended spot.

Lovedbyparents

Popular parenting website Lovedbyparents also holds its own awards. Aldi took gold in the Supermarket of the Year category in 2014, with Ocado receiving silver. Both supermarkets are on the shortlist for the 2015 awards too.
