London Cocktail Week: drinking cocktails in a butterfly house

Updated on 10 October 2014 | 0 Comments

During the last few days of London Cocktail Week, we find some sunlight with rum cocktails and beautiful butterflies.

It's getting colder right now, but there's a unique chance to get warmer in London over the next few days.

That is, if you don't mind sharing the warmth with a few tiny friends...

Cocktails and butterflies

This Shoreditch pop-up bar is hosted by Angostura, who have devised a menu of cocktails inspired by different breeds of butterflies. They're all delicious (as is the five-year-old rum on its own), but the real highlight of the event is to be found in the small enclosure next to the bar, which houses around 150 butterflies.

As you can see, the butterflies are well fed, having a selection of fruit to gorge themselves on. Bananas ferment as they rot, so don't be too surprised to find one or two butterflies keeled over after their meal!

The enclosure is kept at around 30°C to keep the butterflies warm, which is a perfect temperature since the weather outside is rather cold.

If you're planning to enjoy the last few days of London Cocktail Week over the weekend, this pop-up is definitely worth a look. It can be found at 31 New Inn Yard, Shoreditch, EC2A 3EY until Sunday 12th October.

Wristbands for London Cocktail Week cost £10 and allow you to buy selected cocktails for £4 at participating bars.
