Foodie things to do over the late May bank holiday weekend
The second bank holiday of the month of May brings some more great events to enjoy.
Food festivals and events
Food and drink festivals are a great way to try out lots of tasty morsels of artisan food and sip on a few good ales. If you want to see more details of the events, either visit the websites via the links below, or see our full list of events occurring during spring 2014.
- Burnham-on-Sea Food & Drink Festival – 24th May at five venues in central Burnham-on-Sea (free entry)

- The South of England Food & Drink Festival - 25th May at the South of England Showground, Ardingly
Something a bit more unusual
Cheese rolling at Cooper's Hill
Watch the video above to see how brutal this one gets. Competitors race (fall, mostly) down an extremely steep hill. The winner is presented with the cheese. The event has come under scrutiny by the local authorities and the police, who last year were in "attendance in force" according to event organisers. They even sent a helicopter.
This year, all roads leading to the event's location will be closed and parking restrictions imposed in the vicinity. If you intend on going, plan how you're going to get there ahead of time.
Cheese maker Diana Smart was advised last year by police not to supply the cheese. She took their advice, but this year plans to supply the cheese again. She told the Gloucester Citizen that she has been "asked to provide some cheese, so why not?"

Hammer & Claw: An Authentic Maryland Crab Feast
A sit-down meal that's rather different to usual British fare: this American-style crab feast takes place at Farr's School of Dancing in London. You're provided with a hammer and bib, then let loose on a pile of crabs cooked in a spicy rub, with plenty of beer to wash it down. Crack, smash and get as messy as you like (or can stand). The organisers advise dressing down for this reason!
For seafood fans, this sounds like heaven.
