The best cake in Britain: loveFOOD goes to The Cake Awards
Who doesn't like cake? Certainly no one at loveFOOD, that's for sure. So we went to the inaugural Cake Awards at the Hyde Park Hotel to see the best cake in Britain crowned.
Some folk get all the luck – imagine spending an afternoon judging cake? loveFOOD's Charlotte did just that a couple of months ago. The results of her and her fellow judges' tastings were announced on Wednesday (17th July) at the inaugural Cake Awards.
Host for the afternoon was pâtissier and Cake Awards judge Will Torrent, who said of the awards: “It’s fantastic to see the winners of The Cake Awards come from a range of sources, from supermarkets to small tea rooms and bakeries. These awards showcase the outstanding work the cake industry is doing and now UK consumers know where the best cakes are coming from. Congratulations to all the winners.”
Dragon's have a sweet tooth, too
Dragons' Den entrepreneur Deborah Meaden also attended, and has an eye on entering a cake next year with Alison from Propermaid, a cake company she backed on the programme. Watch our exclusive interview with Deborah below.
Let's hear from the winners
As for this year's winners (there were seven categories in total), we caught up with them backstage to hear their stories and ask what winning meant to them.
And the Cake of the Year is…?
The ultimate prize, the Cake of the Year, went to Ross Baxter from The Bakery Dunbar for his 'Dome Chocolat et au Praline Feuillete' (main image, above). Ross said: “It’s an honour to take home both the ‘Bakery Shop Cake’ and the ‘Cake of the Year’ award, and to get the seal of approval from such a prestigious judging panel. The win will help us reach new customers and shout about how great our products are.”
